THIS trio have been together on and off for 33 years and their on-stage bonding shows.Chris and Eddie Amoo, along with Dave Smith, are a close, tight-knit act, especially when accompanied by a band of six musicians who flesh out their catchy songs with the perfect mix of soul, disco and funk. The Real Thing have made some of the greatest 70s pop songs: perennial juke box favourites that get your feet tapping and make you want to singalong with their feel good lyrics. They opened their set with Can You Feel The Force? and in a 90- minute energetic show they didn’t put a foot or note wrong. The Real Thing are one of the warmest bands from

Liverpool and they proudly proclaimed their roots many times – each mention receiving rapturous applause. Can’t Get By Without You with its chorus nearly took the roof off the always excellent acoustics of the Phil. You’ll Never Know What You’re Missing, their hit ballad, was another gem in a very carefully well-paced concertEddie Amoo, in white jump suit and with a state-of-the-art microphone, was a master of ceremonies while his brother and Dave also gave 100 per cent. They were ever-attentive to the crowd and throughout shook hands with those at the front. They even serenaded a few lucky ladies and occasionally posed for mobile phone photos.Their harmonies were exceptional throughout. On a disco medley called Rhythm of the Seventies they paid tribute to their contemporaries such as Kool and The Gang and Chic. But their own back catalogue was equally well received. The autobiographical album about

Liverpool 8, Four From Eight, proved what a great song-writing outfit they are with

Stanhope Street

and Children of The Ghetto. The classic number one You To Me Are Everything had everyone back on their feet again. And then there was a nod back to the opening song with a boisterous Can You Feel The Force? The Real Thing are yet another

Liverpool success story – a Toxteth group that never forgot its roots and in the process have to this day such a strong, loyal fan base.

A triumphant home-coming show from a band who have never really left the city.
